Now we know why Hansel & Gretel left a trail of bread crumbs. We found a fantastic hiking trail in the Black Forest south of Triberg. However we assumed Germans did such a good job of marking everything that a trail map was unnecessary. Big mistake. To make a long story short, we must have followed the wrong signs and ended up very far from our car. Night and cold came quickly and we were stuck following a trail lit by our trusty iPhone. We came upon a farm and the hero of this story turned out to be the friendly German farmer who saw our light, proceeded to pile us into his auto, and drove us the many kilometers back to our car. He didn’t speak English, but he understood the universal language of cold and frightened children (and the name of the town where we parked). Thank you German farmer!

The hike Started with a lot of joy.

The trail is pretty obvious at this point.
And then darkness (no more photos – needed the phone to light the trail).

Hana was cuckoo for this clock (taken before we left for our hike).

Good Lord, the old Hagestrom sense of direction taking over! Glad you made it out safe, thank you German farmer!
